Even if you haven't managed to make it to your local movie theatre to watch Captain Marvel, you're probably aware that the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set in the past.

The 21st movie in the MCU was actually set in 1995, which saw the pasts of the likes of Nick Fury, Phil Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. explored for the first time on the big screen.

Inevitably, this has resulted in some problems with regards to the franchise's timeline, as a number of plot holes and retcons have come to light (a plot hole being an inconsistency in the narrative or character development of a story and a retcon being a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events).

In this video, we'll run you through a few of them.

The plot holes and retcons in question are; the reason Nick Fury started the Avenger Initiative, where the name "Avengers" came from, the use of the "S.H.I.E.L.D." acronym, why aliens didn't attack the Earth until 2012, the loss of Nick Fury's eye, Nick Fury's general backstory, the history of the Tesseract, why Nick Fury intended to use the Tesseract to make weapons in the Avengers, Phil Coulson's knowledge of the Kree, and Stan Lee's cameos.

We hope you enjoy the video! Please leave a comment letting us know what you thought about it. And don't forget to subscribe to Screen Rant's YouTube channel, so you never miss our great new video uploads in the future.
